Buying a Dirt Bike on Facebook Marketplace: What to Check First

Marketplace can turn up a genuine bargain, but you're also buying entirely on trust. Here's what to actually check before you hand over cash.

Ask for real history, not just a description

"Runs mint, no issues" tells you nothing. Ask specifically: how many hours or how old is it, when were the oil and filters last changed, has the top end or valves ever been done, and has it ever been crashed hard or dropped in water. A seller who can answer specifically is a much better sign than one who can't.

Check the bike in person, in daylight, running cold

  • Ask to see it started from cold — a bike that's already warmed up before you arrive can hide a hard starting problem.
  • Look for oil weeping from the forks, engine cases or head gasket.
  • Check the chain and sprockets for wear, and the tyres for age-related cracking, not just tread.
  • Squeeze the front brake and clutch lever for a firm, consistent feel.
  • Check the frame, triple clamps and bars for straightness — subtle bends are a sign of a real crash.

Verify it isn't stolen or owing money

Where a bike is registered, a PPSR check can reveal whether there's money owing on it (which can follow the bike to a new owner) and a stolen-vehicle check is worth doing where available. Many off-road-only dirt bikes aren't registered at all, which makes this harder — ask for proof of ownership (a receipt, rego papers, or at minimum a story that adds up) and be cautious of a seller who's cagey about it.

Meet safely and bring cash sense, not just riding sense

Meet in a public place if you can, bring someone with you, and never pay a deposit to "hold" a bike for someone you've only spoken to online — that's one of the more common scam patterns. If a price feels too good, it usually is.

The alternative: buy already checked

Every bike we sell goes through our own workshop before it's listed — oil, filters, brakes, tyres, suspension and a general safety check — so you get an honest rundown of condition and history up front rather than having to play detective. See what's currently in our inventory, with finance available through our partner lenders if you want to spread the cost. And if you've got a bike to move on yourself, we buy those too — see Sell Us Your Bike.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy a dirt bike on Facebook Marketplace?

It can be fine, but you're relying entirely on the seller's honesty and your own inspection. Checking history, meeting in person and verifying ownership all reduce the risk.

Should I get a PPSR check before buying a used dirt bike?

It's a sensible step for registered vehicles — it can reveal money owing that would otherwise follow the bike to you. Many dirt bikes aren't registered, which makes this harder to verify.

What are red flags when buying a used dirt bike privately?

A seller who won't answer specific questions about hours or history, pressure to pay a deposit before viewing, and a price well below similar listings are all worth treating carefully.

Is buying from a dealer safer than Marketplace?

It generally removes a lot of the guesswork — a dealer bike that's been workshop-checked comes with a known condition and history rather than relying on a stranger's word.
