SX vs EXC: motocross or enduro?

The letters after the number tell you what a KTM was built for. SX models are motocross bikes, built for the track, with stiffer suspension and aggressive power. SX-F models, like the 250 SX-F, are the four-stroke versions. EXC models, like the 350 EXC, are enduro bikes. They're built for trails and long days in the bush, with softer suspension, a wider spread of gears and lights.

If you mostly ride the track, an SX is the one to look at. If you ride forestry, farm tracks or enduro events, an EXC will usually be more comfortable and easier to live with. You'll also see XC and XC-W models, which sit in between for cross-country riding.

What to check on a used KTM

• Hours and servicing. Ask for the hours and what's been done. Regular oil and filter changes matter, especially on four-strokes.
• Clutch. Most modern KTMs have a hydraulic clutch. Check that it engages smoothly and the lever feels firm.
• Cooling system. Look for coolant leaks and dented radiators.
• Suspension and bearings. Check fork seals, the shock, and the linkage and swingarm bearings for play.
• How it's been used. A trail bike that's been raced hard wears differently from one that's done gentle weekend rides.
