Understanding the CRF range
Honda uses the letter at the end of the name to tell you what a CRF is for:
- CRF-R models, like the CRF250R and CRF450R, are motocross bikes built for the track, with race-focused suspension and power.
- CRF-RX models are based on the R but set up for off-road and cross-country riding.
- CRF-F models are trail bikes. They're softer, more relaxed and friendlier for beginners and casual riders.
If you want a bike for the track or club racing, a CRF250R or CRF450R is the one to look at. If you're after easy trail riding or a first bike, a trail model will usually suit you better.
Buying a used CRF250R or CRF450R
Motocross bikes work hard, so how a bike has been looked after matters as much as its year. Ask about hours, oil changes and when the valves were last checked. Look for fork seal leaks and a shock that isn't leaking or tired. Chain, sprockets, tyres and brakes are worth a look too, because replacing them adds up. Check that the bike starts easily and idles cleanly once warm. A straight frame and bars with no signs of a big crash are a good sign.

What does the R mean on a Honda CRF250R?
The R marks Honda's motocross models, built for the track. RX models are set up for off-road and cross-country riding, and F models are trail bikes.
Is a CRF450R too much bike for a beginner?
For most beginners, yes. A 450cc motocross bike has a lot of power. A 250 or a trail model is usually a better place to start. Talk to us about your experience and we'll help you choose.
