The Kawasaki KX line-up
The KX range is Kawasaki's motocross family, and the number tells you the engine size:
- KX85 is a junior motocross bike for young riders moving up from smaller bikes. See our kids' dirt bikes page for more on sizing.
- KX250 is a 250cc four-stroke. It's a popular all-rounder for club racing and weekend riding.
- KX450 is the full-size 450cc four-stroke, with plenty of power for bigger or more experienced riders.
Older four-stroke models were badged with an F on the end, like the KX250F and KX450F. So if you're comparing a KX450F with a newer KX450, they're the same type of bike from different model years.
What to look for on a used KX
As with any used motocross bike, the history matters more than the badge. Ask about hours and when the oil, filters and valves were last looked at. Check the forks and shock for leaks, and look for play in the wheel, linkage and steering head bearings. Listen for a clean start and a steady idle. Check the frame, bars and radiators for signs of big crashes. Our workshop checks every bike before it goes on sale, and we're happy to talk you through what we found.

Frequently asked questions
Is a KX450F the same as a KX450?
They're the same type of bike: a 450cc four-stroke motocrosser. Kawasaki used to add an F to its four-stroke models, and newer model years dropped it.
Should I buy a KX250 or a KX450?
It depends on your size, experience and riding. A 450 has a lot more power, while a 250 four-stroke is lighter and easier to ride hard. Tell us how you ride and we'll help you choose.
Do you sell the KX85 for kids?
