Choosing the right size
Kids' dirt bikes generally range from 50cc for small first-timers, through 65cc and 85cc junior bikes, up to 125cc for bigger or more experienced young riders. Engine size is only part of the picture. The best fit depends on your rider's height, strength and experience.
- Reach the ground. Sitting on the bike, your rider should be able to touch the ground with the balls of their feet so they can steady themselves.
- Reach the controls. They should be able to hold the bars and work the clutch and brake levers comfortably.
- Match the power to the rider. A bike that's too powerful can knock a young rider's confidence. It's usually better to step up when they're ready than to buy a size to "grow into".
Junior motocross bikes like the KTM 85 SX and Kawasaki KX85 are popular for young riders who've outgrown a smaller bike. Tell us your rider's age, height and experience and we'll point you at bikes that suit.
Safety gear and supervision
Young riders should always ride with adult supervision and in a suitable place, like private land or a track. Good gear matters too: a properly fitted helmet, boots, goggles, gloves and body protection. Frequently asked questions
What size dirt bike does my child need?
It depends on their height, strength and experience more than their age. They should be able to touch the ground with the balls of their feet and reach the bars and levers comfortably. Tell us about your rider and we'll help you choose.
Is an 85cc dirt bike too big for a beginner?
An 85cc junior motocross bike can be a lot for a complete beginner. It's usually better suited to young riders who've already got some experience on a smaller bike. Talk to us and we'll help you find the right fit.
What safety gear does a young rider need?
