YZ-F four-strokes vs YZ two-strokes

Yamaha's motocross bikes come in two families. The YZ-F models, like the YZ250F and YZ450F, are four-strokes. They deliver smooth, usable power and are a common choice for everyone from club racers to weekend riders. The YZ models without the F, like the YZ125 and YZ250, are two-strokes. They're lighter and simpler, with a snappier power delivery that many riders love.

You'll also see FX models, like the YZ450FX. They're built on the motocross platform but set up for cross-country and off-road riding rather than the track.

What to check on a used YZ250F

The YZ250F is one of the most common used dirt bikes in the country. If you're looking at one, here's what's worth asking about:

• Hours and service history. Four-strokes like regular oil changes and valve clearance checks. Ask what's been done and when.
• Starting and idle. It should start without too much fuss and settle into a steady idle once warm.
• Suspension. Look for oil on the fork legs, which can mean worn seals, and check the rear shock for leaks.
• Wear items. Chain, sprockets, tyres, brakes and wheel bearings all add up if they need replacing.
• Crash damage. Check for bent bars or levers, a straight frame and radiators that haven't been knocked about.
