Can I Ride a Dirt Bike on My Own Land in NZ?

For most lifestyle block and farm owners the answer is yes, but there are a few practical and legal points worth checking first. Here are the ones that trip people up.

You do not need a road-legal bike

On your own private land the bike does not have to be registered or have a warrant. That is why so many riders buy a motocross or farm bike that is not road legal. If you want to ride on the road as well, see our road-legal guide.

Check your council's rules

Noise is the biggest issue. Your district plan may set noise limits or rules on activities near neighbours, and a council can act on excessive noise complaints. A quick call to your council before you buy can save grief later.

Be a good neighbour

  • Ride at sensible hours, not early mornings or late evenings
  • Keep the track or riding area away from boundaries where you can
  • Talk to your neighbours before you start, rather than after the first complaint
  • Consider a quieter bike or a spark arrestor-compliant exhaust in dry areas

Keep the riding area safe

  • Walk the area for hidden holes, wire, rocks and stumps
  • Close gates and mark hazards such as fences and drains
  • Keep stock and other people clear
  • Never ride alone where no one can find you if something goes wrong

Insurance and your home policy

Check whether your home or farm policy covers riding on the property, and whether the bike is covered for theft. See whether you need insurance for a dirt bike.

Choose a bike that suits the property

A small block suits a lower-powered trail bike, while a large farm may suit a bigger machine or even a quad. Read quad vs dirt bike and the best beginner dirt bikes.

Kit up every time

Falls happen at any speed and it is easy to get complacent at home. Wear a helmet, goggles, boots and gloves. Our friends at GearShed stock helmets and boots.

ShowShed is a Hamilton dirt bike and quad dealer, back to the home page or browse every bike in stock. Gear for the ride is at our sister store GearShed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register a dirt bike I only ride on my land?

Generally not, as registration relates to road use. Check current NZTA guidance if you are unsure.

Can my neighbour complain about the noise?

Yes, and councils can act on noise complaints. It pays to check local rules and talk to neighbours.

Is it safe to ride alone on my property?

It is risky. Tell someone where you are and when you will be back, or ride with someone nearby.
