Dirt Bike Gear Checklist: What Every Rider Needs

Good gear doesn't make you a better rider, but it makes the inevitable off a lot less costly. Here's what actually matters, roughly in order of priority.

Helmet — non-negotiable

This is the one piece of gear worth spending properly on. Make sure it's a genuine off-road motocross helmet (not a road helmet) that fits snugly with no movement, and replace it after any significant impact even if it looks fine — the protective foam can be compromised invisibly.

Goggles

Dust, mud and flying debris make goggles essential, not optional, for off-road riding. A spare set of tear-offs or a roll-off system is worth it if you're riding in muddy conditions often.

Boots

Proper motocross boots protect your feet, ankles and lower shins from impacts, branches and the bike itself in a crash — regular footwear offers almost none of this protection and can also fail to grip the pegs properly.

Body protection

At minimum, a chest/back protector guards against impacts and debris. Many riders add knee braces or guards and elbow guards too, especially once riding gets faster or more technical — worth it before an injury convinces you, not after.

Gloves

Motocross-specific gloves protect your hands in a fall and improve grip on the bars, especially once they're sweaty or muddy. They wear out faster than people expect — check the palms periodically for thinning material.

Riding gear (jersey and pants)

Purpose-made riding gear is lighter, more breathable and more durable against abrasion than everyday clothing, and pairs properly with knee guards and body armour underneath. It's not just about looking the part.

For young or new riders specifically

Make sure gear actually fits rather than buying oversized to "grow into" — loose gear, especially boots and a helmet, can move during a fall and fail to protect properly. See our kids' dirt bikes guide for sizing the bike alongside the gear.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum gear needed to ride a dirt bike safely?

At a minimum, a properly fitted off-road helmet, goggles, boots and gloves. Body armour (chest/back protector) and knee guards add significant protection beyond that.

Can I use a road motorcycle helmet for dirt biking?

No — off-road riding needs a genuine motocross helmet, which is built differently for the impacts and visibility needs of off-road riding.

How often should dirt bike gear be replaced?

A helmet should be replaced after any significant impact regardless of appearance. Boots, gloves and body armour should be checked periodically and replaced once protection or fit is compromised.
