How Often Should You Service a Dirt Bike?

Dirt bikes get serviced far more often than road bikes, because off-road riding is simply harder on an engine. Here's a realistic schedule.

After every ride

  • Clean and re-oil (or replace) the air filter — dust and mud choke a dirty filter fast, and a torn one can let grit straight into the engine.
  • Check and clean the chain, and re-lube it.
  • Quick look over for loose bolts, especially after a hard ride or any crashes.

Engine oil

Four-strokes typically want an oil change every 5–15 hours of riding depending on the model and how hard it's ridden — check your owner's manual for the exact interval. Two-strokes don't use engine oil the same way (it's mixed with the fuel), but still need their transmission oil changed periodically.

Valve clearances (4-strokes only)

Four-stroke valve clearances should be checked roughly every 15–30 hours, more often if the bike is raced hard. Left too long, tight valves can cause real engine damage, so this isn't one to skip even though it's easy to forget.

Top-end rebuilds (2-strokes)

A two-stroke's piston and rings wear faster than a four-stroke's internals and typically need attention every 20–40 hours of harder riding, sometimes longer for gentler use. Watch for a drop in power or harder starting as an early warning sign.

Suspension and bearings

Fork oil and seals are generally worth servicing every 20–30 hours, and wheel, swingarm and steering head bearings should be checked a couple of times a season, especially if you ride wet or muddy conditions often, which accelerates wear.

Why service history matters when buying used

A bike with a documented service history is worth more and carries far less risk than one with an unknown past — it's one of the first things worth asking about on any used bike. Every bike we sell has already been through our own workshop before it's listed, so you're getting an honest account of condition rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you change oil on a 4-stroke dirt bike?

Typically every 5 to 15 hours of riding depending on the model, though it's worth checking your specific owner's manual for the exact interval.

Do 2-stroke dirt bikes need oil changes?

Not engine oil in the same way — it's mixed with the fuel — but the transmission oil still needs periodic changing, and the top end needs rebuilding every 20 to 40 hours of harder riding.

How often should dirt bike valves be checked?

Roughly every 15 to 30 hours on a 4-stroke, more often if it's ridden hard or raced.

Why does service history matter when buying a used dirt bike?

A documented history tells you whether maintenance like oil changes and valve checks has actually been done, which affects both reliability and resale value.
