250F vs 450F: Which Is Better?

Both are four-stroke motocross bikes, and on paper the 450 sounds like the obvious choice. In practice it is often the 250F that makes more riders faster and happier.

The 250F

Light, nimble and revvy. A 250F wants to be kept in the power, and you ride it with the clutch and gearbox. It is less physically demanding, and many riders find it easier to ride fast without being over-mounted. It is the usual step up from a 125 or an 85.

The 450F

Much more torque and a stronger pull out of corners. A 450 can be ridden in a higher gear and lets you be lazier with shifting, but the power arrives hard and it is heavier and more tiring. It rewards a rider who is strong, fit and has the skills to control it.

Which suits whom?

  • Beginner or intermediate: usually a 250F, or a smaller bike first
  • Bigger, heavier or tall rider: may prefer the 450
  • Fast, experienced riders: either, depending on the track and preference
  • Tight tracks: the 250F is often more fun
  • Open, fast tracks: a 450 stretches its legs

Running costs and maintenance

A 450 is generally harder on parts, and a 250F that is revved hard can also wear quickly. Both need regular servicing. See how often to service a dirt bike.

The middle path

There are also 350cc bikes, such as the KTM 350 SX-F, which sit between the two. We cover where a 450 makes sense in best 450cc bikes for intermediate riders.

Gear up

The faster you go, the more the right gear matters: helmets, boots and an honest take on neck braces on the GearShed blog.

How to decide on the day

If you can, ride both on the same track. Pay attention to how tired you are after ten minutes, how much you have to think about the throttle, and which bike lets you carry smooth speed. A bike that flatters you on a short ride may be harder work over a whole moto. If you cannot try them, ask yourself where you ride most, and be honest about your fitness and skill. Most riders enjoy the bike they can ride well more than the one with the bigger number.
