How Fast Does a 125cc Dirt Bike Go?

It is one of the most common questions from parents and new riders. The honest answer is a range, because not all 125s are the same.

A rough range

Trail and farm 125cc four-strokes, such as the Honda and Yamaha play and trail bikes, often top out around 70 to 90 km/h. A full-spec 125cc two-stroke motocross bike, such as a KTM 125 SX or Yamaha YZ125, can be a lot quicker, with top speeds that can reach 100 km/h or more on the right gearing. These are ballpark figures, not guarantees.

What changes the speed

  • Two-stroke or four-stroke: 125 two-strokes make power high up the rev range and are lively, see 2-stroke vs 4-stroke
  • Gearing: the sprockets set the balance between acceleration and top speed
  • Rider weight and skill
  • Terrain: you will never see top speed in a muddy paddock
  • Condition and tune: a tired engine is a slow one

Speed is not the point

On a dirt bike, acceleration, handling and how forgiving it is matter more than top speed. A 125 two-stroke can feel extremely fast on a tight track, because it is light and revvy.

Is a 125 right for a first bike?

For a keen teenager or a small adult, a 125 can be a good step. For a first-timer who has never ridden, a smaller or more gentle bike is usually better. Read best beginner dirt bikes and what dirt bike to buy after an 85.

Speed and safety

Even at 60 km/h a fall hurts without the right gear. Pair any 125 with a good helmet, boots and protection, such as the protection gear at GearShed.

Speed for kids and teens

Many young riders move to a 125 after an 85, and the jump in speed is real. Start in a paddock rather than a fast track, learn the throttle and the brakes, and build up. A teenager on a 125 two-stroke can find the power band very quickly, so make sure their protection is up to it, with a helmet, boots and a chest protector. Our chest protector guide explains what to look for.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 125cc dirt bike fast enough for adults?

For many small adults and trail riders, yes. Heavier or faster riders usually prefer a 250cc or bigger.

Can a 125cc dirt bike be ridden on the road?

Only if it is road legal, registered and the rider is licensed. A motocross 125 normally is not.

Is a 125 two-stroke harder to ride than a 4-stroke?

It can be more demanding because the power comes in higher in the rev range.
