What Dirt Bike Should a Teenager Ride After an 85?
Growing out of an 85 is a good problem, and also a tricky decision. Go too big and their confidence takes a knock. Go too small and they outgrow it in a season.
Look at the rider first
Height, weight, strength and experience matter far more than age. A tall 12-year-old may be ready for a full-size bike, while a smaller 15-year-old may be better on something lighter.
Common next steps
- Big-wheel 85: a 19-inch front and 16-inch rear, a good bridge if the rider is taller but still building skills
- 125cc two-stroke: a classic step up, light and fast, but needs to be ridden hard to enjoy
- 150cc four-stroke: smoother power delivery, which suits many teens
- 250F: the usual next bike for a competent, bigger teenager
Check the fit
Seat height and reach matter. Your teen should be able to touch the ground on tiptoes at least, and reach the bars without stretching. If they are barely touching the ground, the bike is probably too tall, which makes it harder to control. See what size dirt bike suits your height for the same fit checks.
Do not buy to grow into it
We cover this in our kids' sizing guide. The right bike now is better than a bigger bike next year. Dirt bikes also hold value, so you can sell the 85 and put it towards the next one. See how to get the best trade-in value.
Update the gear too
Teens outgrow gear as fast as bikes. Check helmet and boot fit, and consider protection for the bigger speeds. See GearShed's youth gear sizing guide.

A quick checklist before you buy
- Can they start it, pick it up and get on it by themselves?
- Are they comfortable on the clutch, gears and brakes of the 85?
- Do their boots and helmet still fit? See GearShed's kids' gear sizing guide
If all three are a yes, they are probably ready. If not, another season on the 85 is no bad thing.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 125 or a 250F better after an 85?
A 125 is lighter and a gentler jump, while a 250F is a bigger step best for taller, stronger teens.
How do I know my teen is ready for a bigger bike?
They are riding the 85 confidently, are comfortable with the clutch and gears, and are physically big enough to handle the larger bike.
Can I sell the 85 to fund the next bike?
Yes. Dirt bikes hold value well, and we buy bikes too.
