How Do I Check a Used Dirt Bike Isn't Stolen or Owing Money?
Buying privately can save money, but you take on the risk if the bike is stolen or has finance owing against it. A few simple checks protect you.
1. Search the PPSR
New Zealand's Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) shows whether a security interest, such as finance, is registered against a vehicle. You can search by the frame number (VIN) or serial number. Check the current fee and how the search works on the PPSR website. If there is finance owing, the lender may be able to repossess the bike from you, even though you paid the seller.
2. Match the numbers
Find the frame number stamped on the steering head and check it matches the paperwork. Look at the engine number too. Marks that look scratched, ground off or re-stamped are a warning sign.
3. Ask for proof of ownership
Ask for the seller's name and ID, original receipts, registration records if the bike has them, and service history. The name on any paperwork should match the person selling it. A seller who cannot explain where the bike came from is a red flag.
4. Beware of a price that is too good
A late-model bike priced well under the market is a classic sign. Sellers who rush you, insist on cash, or refuse to meet at their home are also cause for caution.
5. Check the bike's condition against the story
A bike that is sold as barely used but is worn, or has bent controls or signs of a hard life, deserves questions. See how to inspect a used dirt bike, and how many hours is too many.
6. If you are unsure, contact the Police
If you think a bike may be stolen, contact the Police rather than confronting the seller.
The easier way
