What Age Can a Child Ride a Quad in NZ?
Quads are common on NZ farms, and kids are often keen to ride. But quads are not toys, and age and size matter even more than they do for a dirt bike.
The guidance
WorkSafe NZ's guidance is that children should not ride adult-sized quad bikes, and that young children should not ride quads at all. Check WorkSafe's current guidance for the age and size recommendations, because it is updated from time to time.
Why adult quads are a problem
Adult quads are heavy and powerful, and kids lack the size and strength to control them, particularly on slopes. Rollovers are a significant cause of injury and death on NZ farms.
Youth quads
Youth quads are smaller and lower-powered, often with a limiter. Even then, a child should only ride one that matches their size and ability, with supervision. Do not let them ride a bigger quad that they will grow into.
Safety essentials
- A properly fitted helmet, goggles and boots, and gloves and long clothing
- Flat, open and safe terrain, not steep or rough slopes
- Adult supervision all the time
- No passengers on a single-seat quad
- Training in how to ride, brake and turn
Think about the alternative
A small dirt bike may be more suitable for a learner. They are lighter and easier to control, and a rider can step off if things go wrong. Compare the two in quad vs dirt bike, and see what age a child can start riding a dirt bike.

Buying a quad
Teach respect for the machine
Quads behave differently to bikes. They do not lean, so body position matters, and they can roll on uneven ground. Show young riders how to shift their weight, how to stay off slopes and how to stop. Take it slowly, in a safe area, and review how it went. If your child shows more interest in dirt bikes, our guide to the best beginner dirt bikes is a good next read.
