What Age Can a Child Start Riding a Dirt Bike?
There is no magic number. Many kids start between four and seven, but readiness depends on size, balance, attention and whether they actually want to ride.
Look for readiness, not just age
- They can balance on a pedal bike without stabilisers
- They can touch the ground on a small bike and reach the controls
- They can follow simple instructions, and stop when told
- They are keen, not pushed into it
Which bike to start on
A 50cc kids' bike with an automatic or single-speed set-up is the usual starter, often with a throttle limiter that parents can set. See our kids' sizing guide for the ladder up to 125cc, and browse kids and first bikes.
Where to ride
An enclosed, flat paddock or a club learner area is far better than a busy track. Keep sessions short, and finish while they are still having fun.
Supervision
Young riders should always be supervised by an adult who can see them, and ideally has some riding experience. Agree signals for stop and slow down.
The gear is a must
A full-face helmet that fits, goggles, boots, gloves, long pants, jersey and body protection. No exceptions, no matter how slow the bike. See the GearShed kids' gear sizing guide, and why you should consider a helmet with a rotational impact system.
Grow into the next size
When they outgrow the 50, the 65 and then the 85 are the usual steps. We buy bikes back, so you can put the old one towards the next. See Sell Us Your Bike.
Quads
If you are thinking about quads for children, read what age a child can ride a quad.
Teach good habits early
Teach them to check the bike before riding, to look where they want to go, and to fall away from the bike. Our first-time riding tips cover the basics.
Signs they are not ready yet
If your child is scared, cries or loses interest after a few minutes, take the pressure off. Waiting a few months often makes a big difference. Never force it, because the aim is a kid who loves riding for years. Keep the first rides short, calm and fun, and stay close.
