What Size Dirt Bike Do I Need for My Height?
Adult dirt bike sizing is mostly about seat height, reach and your confidence. A few simple checks will tell you if a bike fits.
Seat height is the headline number
Full-size motocross bikes often have a seat height of 900 mm or more, and some are noticeably taller. That is higher than most people expect. Compare the spec with your inseam. You do not need to be flat-footed, as you are not riding a road bike, but you need to be able to support the bike when you stop.
The sit-on test
- Sit on the bike, with your boots on and feet on the ground
- You should be able to get at least the balls of one or both feet down
- Your knees should not be locked, and you should be able to stand on the pegs comfortably
- Reach for the bars, with a slight bend in your elbows
Suspension changes the story
The seat height in the brochure is measured unloaded. When you sit on it the suspension sags, which lowers the bike. Stiffer springs, set for heavier riders, sag less. Suspension set-up for your weight makes a real difference to how tall the bike feels, and to how it rides.
Tweaks for shorter riders
- Lowering links or fork adjustments, if the bike's maker allows them
- A lower, thinner seat
- Choosing a bike that is built lower, see lowest seat height dirt bikes for short riders
Taller riders
A tall rider on a small bike will feel cramped and have poor control. Look at taller bars, a higher seat, or a larger bike. A 450 may suit a taller, heavier rider, as covered in 250F vs 450F.
Skill matters
A beginner on a tall bike will feel nervous, so lean towards the more manageable bike. See our best beginner dirt bikes.

Frequently asked questions
How tall do I need to be for a full-size dirt bike?
There is no fixed height, but many full-size bikes suit riders around 170 cm and above. Seat height, suspension and confidence matter more than the number.
Can I lower a dirt bike?
Often yes, with lowering links or suspension adjustments. Check that it is safe and suited to your weight.
Is it bad to be on tiptoes?
On a dirt bike it is fairly normal, but you should still be stable at a stop.
