Do You Need a Licence to Ride a Dirt Bike in NZ?

It depends where you ride. Off-road on private land and on a public road are treated very differently, and a lot of the confusion comes from mixing the two up.

On the road

To ride on a public road you need a motorcycle licence, and the bike has to be registered, licensed and have a current warrant, as well as meeting the road-legal requirements for lights, indicators, mirrors, tyres and so on. A motocross bike with none of those is not allowed on the road. See our guide to whether a dirt bike is road legal in NZ.

Off-road on private land

For riding on private property, such as a farm or lifestyle block, you generally do not need a road licence to ride. What you do need is the landowner's permission, and the sense to ride within your ability. Rules can vary by council and by site, so check any local requirements.

Motorcycle licence stages

If you plan to ride on the road, NZ uses a graduated system. In simple terms you start with a learner licence, then a restricted licence and then a full licence, with different conditions at each stage. The details, ages and tests change from time to time, so check the current requirements with NZTA Waka Kotahi before you book anything.

Kids and young riders

Children can ride small bikes off-road on private land under supervision without a licence, which is how most riders start. Our guides on what age a child can start riding and what size bike they need cover the practical side.

Clubs and tracks

Riding at a club or track normally has its own rules: membership, entry fees, safety gear and often an age or skill requirement. Ask before you go.

Insurance and ACC

NZ's ACC covers accidental injuries, but not damage to your bike. See whether you need insurance for a dirt bike.

The gear is not optional

No licence does not mean no risk. Wear a proper helmet, goggles, boots and gloves every time. See our gear checklist and the minimum gear to start dirt biking on GearShed.
