Where Can I Ride a Dirt Bike in NZ?

Finding somewhere legal and safe to ride is half the challenge of dirt biking. Here is where most riders end up, and the rules to check first.

Private land, with permission

Your own land, or a friend's or farmer's, with the owner's clear permission, is the most common option. Always ask first, leave gates as you find them and respect stock and crops. See riding on your own land.

Motorcycle clubs and tracks

Clubs affiliated with Motorcycling NZ run tracks, practice days and events across the country. Membership, entry fees, insurance and safety gear rules apply. Joining a club is also the best way to meet riders and learn. Search for clubs and tracks near you, including in the Waikato.

Commercial riding parks

Some commercial parks offer day passes with a range of tracks. Check the opening days, the rules and age limits before you go.

Public land: check first

Rules for riding on public land vary a lot. Many parks and conservation areas do not allow motorbikes, and some beaches have restrictions. Forestry blocks may allow access by permit. Do not assume that open land is open to riders. Check with the land manager, council or the Department of Conservation as appropriate.

Public roads and legal bikes

On a public road you need a road-legal bike and a licence. See is a dirt bike road legal in NZ and do you need a licence.

Be a good ambassador

  • Keep noise down and stay on permitted tracks
  • Pack out what you take in
  • Slow down for walkers, horses and stock
  • Do not ride in wet, soft conditions that wreck tracks

Gear and preparation

Remote rides need extra planning: tools, spare tubes, a hydration pack and a riding buddy. GearShed has tyres and maintenance supplies to pack, and a guide to tyre pressure.

What to pack for a day out

  • Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
  • Basic tools, cable ties and tape
  • Water and snacks, plus a first-aid kit
  • A phone, and a plan for when you will be back

Tell someone where you are going, and ride with a mate when you can.
